I learnt the hard way that a lot of pupils don’t have a clue how to do investigations, and why should they? A Mathematical investigation takes creativity, planning, the ability to communicate and most importantly perseverance. These are all skills which can be taught and need to be practised. I pretty much stopped doing investigations after a few failed ones on my PGCE and during my NQT year. To be honest the lessons were me walking in and saying “here is the problem-GO!”, the kids didn’t have a clue where to start. I’ve started to try a structure investigations more, so I can train my groups up to be more independent in future.
